We stock and install Viking-compatible hinge and roller replacements throughout San Jose, and most residential swaps run $180 – $420 installed, parts and labor included. We carry the common Viking series sizes on the truck, so in many San Jose neighborhoods we can have your gate rolling again the same day we look at it. The way most owners discover the failure is gradual at first: the gate starts dragging on the last foot of travel, then one day it binds completely and the operator strains against a roller that has seized or a hinge that has sagged out of line. That dragging sound is the part telling you it is done.
Every hinge and roller swap we do is priced in writing before we start, and it is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new roller fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking gate hardware spans several series lines, and the hinge and roller setup differs between them. The parts we replace most often in San Jose fall into three groups:
- Viking G-5 and R-6 series residential swing gates: these use adjustable weld-on or bolt-on barrel hinges paired with a bottom roller or mid-rail guide roller. The hinge pin diameter is typically 3/4-inch on the G-5 and 1-inch on the heavier R-6.
- Viking T-3, T-5, and T-6 slide gates: slide gates do not use hinges, but they eat rollers on a schedule. The T-series runs on steel or nylon V-groove rollers, usually 4-inch or 6-inch diameter, mounted to a steel track. If your Viking slide gate shudders when it moves, this is the page that applies.
- Viking estate and custom-width gates: heavier gates over 14 feet long sometimes use a paired top-guide and bottom-roller arrangement, and these need the weight-rated roller, not the light-duty one that fits a 10-foot gate.
One compatibility gotcha we see often in San Jose: Viking hinge bolt patterns do not always line up with generic hardware-store hinges, even when the plate looks close. Measure center-to-center on the existing bolts before you buy anything. We run OEM Viking parts when a customer wants exact factory spec, and we also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from manufacturers we have tested on Bay Area gates for over a decade. We will tell you the honest price difference for both so you can choose.

Signs Your Viking Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate sags toward the latch side. This almost always means the hinge pins or bushings have worn oval. A sagging gate puts the entire weight on the latch post and the operator, and the fix gets more expensive the longer it waits.
- A grinding or squealing noise when the gate moves. Roller bearings fail first in coastal-influenced San Jose air. Once a sealed bearing lets moisture in, it grinds itself to powder within a few weeks.
- The gate shudders or hops on the track. A flat spot on a V-groove roller causes that rhythmic thump. If you see shiny flat spots on the roller edges, the roller is done.
- The operator runs but the gate moves only partway, then stalls. Most people replace the operator first and find it was a seized hinge all along. We would rather check the mechanicals before selling anyone a board or a motor.
- Visible rust weeping from the hinge barrel or roller axle. Rust is not cosmetic on a load-bearing part. Once it is weeping, the structural steel is compromised and the part is on borrowed time.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here is the honest range for San Jose, parts and labor, based on what we see across the valley and the foothill neighborhoods:
- Single swing-gate hinge pair replacement: $180 – $320 depending on hinge size and whether it is bolt-on or welded.
- Slide-gate roller replacement (2 – 4 rollers): $220 – $420 depending on roller diameter, axle type, and whether the track needs shimming.
- Full hinge and roller refresh on a double swing gate: $340 – $500 when both leaves need hardware.
Every quote we give in San Jose includes the parts, the labor, the adjustment after install, and a written Kingswell Guarantee. The price you approve is the price on the invoice, full stop. The range above shifts based on gate weight, access to the post, and whether the original Viking hardware was welded in place or bolted, which changes the labor time. We will quote it before we disconnect anything.
Dean Prescott puts it plainly: “I’ll give you the number before I touch a single bolt – that’s just how it should work.”
DIY or Call Us?
There is a lot you can check safely at home: look for visible rust, measure the bolt pattern, and watch whether the gate moves evenly as it opens. What we do not recommend is unbolting a loaded hinge on a sagging gate without a plan to support the leaf. A 300-pound gate coming off its last remaining hinge pin is a serious injury waiting to happen, and the same goes for a slide gate that jumps its track while someone has a roller out. If the gate is heavy enough to need two people to lift it, it is heavy enough to call us.
When we do the swap, the gate is supported, the old hardware comes off clean, and everything is aligned before the operator runs again. If you are in San Jose and the gate has started dragging, call (669) 800-5686. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a hinge, a roller, or something else entirely, and give you a plain answer about what it will cost.
FAQs
In San Jose’s dry summers and damp winter months, we see most Viking rollers and hinges last 7 to 12 years depending on gate weight and exposure to irrigation overspray, which kills bearings faster than anything else. If your sprinklers hit the gate hardware, expect the shorter end of that range.
Sometimes yes, if the wear is limited to the bushing and the hinge body is still straight. We can press in new bushings or re-pin a hinge for roughly half the cost of replacement. If the barrel itself is wallowed out or the plates are bent, replacement is the only honest fix.
Most single hinge or roller jobs take 1 to 2 hours on site. A full set on a double gate with welded hardware may run 3 to 4 hours because of the time spent supporting the leaves and grinding the old welds clean.
We keep the most common Viking residential hinge sizes, roller diameters, and axle bolts stocked on our San Jose trucks, and we also carry compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If we do not have your exact size, we can usually have it in hand within one to two business days and will tell you that honestly when you call.
