We weld and fabricate Mighty Mule gate parts in San Jose, with most jobs priced between $180 and $520 installed. That covers everything from broken hinge brackets and bent gate ears to cracked operator mounting plates. If the steel on your Mighty Mule gate has torn, snapped, or twisted, we can usually get it welded and back in service the same day we arrive.
Most San Jose owners discover the problem the hard way. A gate that was swinging smooth starts dragging on the driveway, or the opener starts straining and tripping its limit switch. You go out to look and find a cracked weld at the hinge, or the post the actuator pushes against has started tearing loose. What looked like an electronic problem is usually a metal problem underneath. And metal problems don’t heal themselves: every open and close cycle works the crack wider.
Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To
We work on the full Mighty Mule line, including the MM series swing-gate openers (MM260, MM360, MM371, MM571, MM572) and their dual-gate versions. The welding and fabrication issues we see are rarely electronic. They’re structural: the mounting bracket that holds the actuator to the post, the bracket welded to the gate itself, or the hinge hardware where years of torque and California weather have done their work.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Mighty Mule brackets are punched and formed for specific post sizes, but the mounting ears on the gate side vary widely depending on whether you have a tube-steel farm gate, a welded ornamental gate, or an aluminum driveway gate. A bracket that fits a 2-inch round post won’t bolt cleanly onto a 2-inch square one, and a bracket sized for a chain-link gate ear will sit cockeyed on an ornamental iron frame. That’s exactly where fabrication comes in. We can weld, reinforce, or build a new mounting plate that matches your specific gate geometry instead of forcing a generic bracket to do a job it wasn’t designed for.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Mighty Mule control boards and arms, original equipment is the safest route. But for welded mounting brackets, hinge reinforcers, and gate ears, a quality local fabrication is often stronger than the OEM stamped-steel piece, especially on heavier gates. The stamped version is fine for a light tube gate. Put that same bracket on a solid ornamental gate and it flexes and cracks within a couple of years. San Jose’s dry summers and damp winters mean steel expands, contracts, and rusts at the welds more aggressively than owners expect.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch end. The top hinge weld or the gate frame itself has stretched or cracked. You’ll see the gate visibly lower at the free end, and the latch won’t line up anymore.
- The opener sounds like it’s working harder. When a mounting bracket loosens or the gate ear bends, the actuator has to push at a bad angle. The motor strains, the cycle slows, and the limit switch trips early.
- You can see daylight through a weld joint. A crack you can see is a crack that’s already spreading. Hairline today, a full break in two months of daily cycles.
- The post moves when the gate runs. The actuator is bolted to a post that’s rusted at the base or was never set deep enough. Every open and close works the post in the concrete until the post leans and the gate drags.
- Fresh rust streaks under the bracket. Water pools where the bracket meets the post or gate. The rust stains show where capillary action pulled moisture into the joint and started eating the weld from the inside.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here are the honest San Jose numbers for the most common Mighty Mule welding and fabrication jobs we do:
- Hinge bracket reinforcement or replacement: $180 – $320 including steel, welding, and re-hanging
- Operator mounting plate fabrication: $220 – $420 including material, fabrication, and install
- Gate ear repair (cracked or torn ear): $160 – $280 including grinding, welding, and reinforcement plate
- Post repair or re-setting: $300 – $520 including concrete, anchoring, and re-mounting the actuator
- Full gate frame weld repair: $280 – $520 depending on how much of the frame needs cutting and re-welding
You get the price in writing before a single bolt gets touched, so there’s no door-knock surprise when the job is done. Labor, steel, and welding consumables are all in the number we quote. Every job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Dean Prescott says it best: “I’ll give you the number before I touch a single bolt – that’s just how it should work.”
DIY or Call Us?
There are things you can check safely. Look for visible cracks at hinge points and mounting brackets. Wiggle the gate post and see if it shifts. Run the gate and watch the actuator mount for flex. What you should not do is attempt your own structural welding on a gate under tension. A gate is a loaded system: the spring, the actuator, and the weight of the gate itself are all pushing against the very part you’d be welding. A bad weld on a gate hinge can fail without warning at the worst moment, and that’s a chunk of steel that can hurt someone. Grinding, cutting, and welding on a tensioned gate is not a weekend homeowner job. We’re licensed, insured, and we carry portable welding rigs specifically set up for gate work in San Jose driveways. FAQs
A properly welded and primed bracket should last 8 to 12 years in San Jose’s climate, with the main enemies being trapped moisture and the daily torque cycles from the opener. We use galvanized or painted steel with proper joint prep, which is why our repairs carry a 365-day written guarantee.
Yes, in most cases we can repair the existing bracket or hinge with a grinder, proper penetration weld, and a reinforcement plate. A full replacement only makes sense when the original part is too rusted or fatigued to hold a clean weld, and we’ll tell you which one applies to your setup before we quote it.
Most bracket and hinge welds take 60 to 90 minutes on site once the gate is safely supported and prepped. Larger fabrication jobs, like rebuilding a gate ear or reinforcing a frame, may take two to three hours. We’ll give you a real arrival window when you book.
We carry common Mighty Mule brackets, hardware, and stock steel on the truck, along with a portable welder and grinding setup. For complete actuator arms or control boards we may need to source the part, which usually takes one to two business days. Call (669) 800-5686 and we’ll tell you what we have before we head over.
