Get your free estimateElite Access Control Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
If your Elite gate won’t respond to remotes, keypads, or the control board inside the operator box, the access control installation is the first place we look. We stock Elite-compatible receivers, keypads, loop detectors, and control boards on our trucks, and most access control installations in San Jose run $340 to $780 parts and labor, with the exact price written down before we touch anything. Same-day service is available when the part is in stock, and every installation carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
Most homeowners don’t notice the access control side until it stops working. The gate motor still runs fine. The track and wheels are fine. But the gate only opens when you press the button on the motor itself, or the remote works from ten feet away instead of forty. That’s not a motor problem. That’s the control system, and it’s where Elite systems show their age first, especially in San Jose’s dry summers and damp winter mornings.
Dean Prescott, who leads our San Jose service team, puts it this way: “I’ll give you the number before I touch a single bolt – that’s just how it should work.”
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite gate operators break into two main families: the SL series slide gate operators (SL-3000, SL-3600, SL-3640) and the CS swing gate series (CSW-200, CSW-200UL). The access control installation on these units covers the receiver board, the plug-in radio receiver, wired keypads, loop detectors for vehicle presence, and the external terminals where a homeowner connects a phone entry system or a standalone card reader.
Here’s the gotcha we see constantly in San Jose: Elite changed receiver plug pinouts between older SL-3000 units made before roughly 2012 and the newer SL-3600 and SL-3640 boards. If someone swaps in a used receiver thinking all Elite parts fit all Elite operators, the unit either won’t power the receiver or it chatters the relay and the gate opens and closes on its own. The part number matters on these. If you can read the label on the inside of the operator cover, take a photo of it before calling anyone.
OEM Elite parts are what we install by default. There are a handful of quality aftermarket receivers that work fine on most SL units, but when it comes to the control board itself, we don’t put aftermarket boards in an Elite operator. The voltage tolerances are too tight, and a board that’s “close enough” is how you end up with a fried transformer six months later. For boards, OEM is the only call we’ll make.
Portcullis Gate Repair San Jose is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Elite. We do stock Elite parts alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls components, so the technician who arrives has the specific hardware your system needs.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Remote range has dropped to under fifteen feet. The receiver antenna may have corroded at the connection point, or the receiver itself is losing sensitivity. In San Jose’s climate, we see antenna connections oxidize faster near the bay side of town where salt air gets in.
- The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. This usually points to a failing relay on the receiver board or a loose terminal wire at the control board, not the keypad itself. People replace the keypad and the problem stays, because the issue is downstream.
- The gate opens on its own at random times. A failing loop detector or a receiver picking up stray signals can trigger phantom openings. This is both a nuisance and a security problem, and it’s one of the top three reasons homeowners in the Almaden Valley and Willow Glen call us.
- The operator only works from the manual button on the motor housing. If the gate functions manually but won’t answer remotes or keypads, the receiver path has failed or the board’s accessory terminals are dead. The motor is fine. The access control installation is not.
- You hear a clicking sound but no gate movement. The relay on the receiver clicks, but the control board isn’t passing the command through. That’s typically a burned trace or a failed capacitor on the board itself, and it means the board is done.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Elite access control installation in San Jose breaks down like this, with the price agreed before we open the operator cover:
- Plug-in receiver swap: $140 to $260 installed, depending on the Elite series and whether we need to re-pin or replace the harness.
- Wired keypad replacement: $180 to $320 installed, including weatherproofing the housing and re-terminating the wires.
- Loop detector replacement: $260 to $420 installed, including tuning the loop frequency to the new detector so the gate doesn’t false-trigger.
- Full access control retrofit (receiver, keypad, loop detector, and re-terminating all accessory wiring): $600 to $940 installed, which is the job when the whole system has aged out together.
What drives the range: whether the existing wiring is in good shape or needs re-pulling, whether the operator is an older SL-3000 with the pre-2012 pinout, and whether we’re replacing one component or the whole control chain. You get the parts, the labor, the wiring terminations, and a full function test. Every access control installation we do at Portcullis Gate Repair San Jose includes the written Kingswell Guarantee: 365 days, stamped on the invoice, and if it fails inside that year we come back at no charge. The price is in writing before any work starts, always, on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
For this part, we’re going to be direct: if the issue is a loose wire at the terminal block, a homeowner with a screwdriver and the power off can snug that connection and be back in business. If the issue is anything deeper – a receiver that won’t hold programming, a keypad that works intermittently, a loop detector that drifts – you’re dealing with low-voltage control wiring and board-level diagnostics, and getting it wrong can damage the transformer or the board itself.
The control board in an Elite operator carries live 120V at the transformer even when the gate is idle. Access control wiring is low voltage, but it lives next to line voltage, and one wrong probe placement can put 120V through a receiver that’s rated for 24V. That’s a fire risk and a dead board, in that order. If you’re not certain, call (669) 800-5686 and we’ll send a technician who works on Elite systems every week in San Jose. Background-checked, uniformed, and trained on exactly what sits inside your operator box.
FAQs
Receivers and keypads on Elite operators typically last 7 to 10 years in San Jose’s climate, with receivers near the bay side of town tending to fail earlier because of salt air corrosion at the antenna connection. Loop detectors often last the life of the operator, but the loop wire itself, buried in asphalt or concrete, can fail in 5 to 15 years depending on how much the driveway shifts. Call (669) 800-5686 if your system is in that age range and acting up, and we’ll give you an honest read on what’s left.
Sometimes yes. Loose terminals, corroded antenna connections, and simple relay failures can be repaired. But when a receiver loses sensitivity across all channels or a board shows visible burn marks, replacement is cheaper and more reliable than repair. We’ll tell you which one applies to your unit before you spend a dollar.
A receiver or keypad swap is usually a 45-minute to 90-minute job on site. A full access control retrofit, with loop detector replacement and re-terminating all wiring, can run two to three hours. We’ll give you a real arrival window when you call, not a four-hour shrug, and we stand by that window as part of the Kingswell Way.
Yes. Our San Jose trucks carry Elite receivers for SL and CSW series operators, wired and wireless keypads, loop detectors, and the common harness parts to handle the pre-2012 pinout mismatch. If your exact part isn’t on the truck, we source it same-day from our local supply network. Call (669) 800-5686 and we’ll have a live person on the line who can tell you what we’ve got and what it’ll cost before we roll.
Call Portcullis Gate Repair San Jose at (669) 800-5686 for a free estimate on any Elite access control installation. You’ll get the number before we touch a single bolt, and the Kingswell Guarantee in writing on the invoice when we’re done.
