We keep DoorKing welding and fabrication work running in San Jose with same-week turnaround on most repairs, and most fabricated bracket or hinge replacements land between $220 and $480 parts and labor, depending on the part and your gate’s weight. You’ll usually find out a welded component has failed when the gate sags, scrapes the driveway, or refuses to close all the way because a hinge ear, operator mount, or chain bracket has cracked through.
The good news: we carry a rolling stock of DoorKing-compatible weldments on the truck, and we match your gate’s existing geometry in our shop when the part is too far gone to patch. You’ll get the written price before we strike an arc. As Dean Prescott puts it around the shop, “I’ll give you the number before I touch a single bolt – that’s just how it should work.”
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing has been building slide and swing gate operators for decades, and the welded steel parts we fabricate and replace span most of their lineup: the 6000-series slide operators, the 6100 and 6300 series, the older 9000-series slide gates, and the swing-arm models in the 1600 and 6500 range. The parts we most often cut, weld, or straight-up replace are operator mounting plates, gate hinge ears, chain idler brackets, and the steel posts those operators bolt onto.
Here’s the DoorKing gotcha most owners miss: those bolt holes on a 6000-series mounting plate sit at different centers than the 1600-series swing plates. A generic aftermarket plate that “fits all DoorKings” rarely does. We measure your gate’s bolt pattern and the gate leaf’s weight before we order or cut anything. For sliding gates that weigh over 1,200 pounds in San Jose, we always recommend a heavier-gauge plate than the factory spec, because the soil around Willow Glen and Evergreen shifts with winter rain and puts extra twist on the operator mount.
Worth knowing: Portcullis Gate Repair San Jose is an independent service company. We are not affiliated with DoorKing, but we work on their equipment all week and keep OEM-spec measurements on file. For fabricated steel parts, most owners don’t need to pay factory prices: a properly cut and welded local plate from 3/16-inch steel will outlast the stamped original. For safety-relevant components like gate hinges and operator mounts, we match factory geometry and exceed the material spec where it costs little to do so.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
Here’s what we see most often on DoorKing gates across San Jose, and what each symptom usually means:
- The gate sags on the latch side. This is almost always a hinge ear or a hinge post that has cracked or fatigued at the weld. A sag of half an inch at the latch usually means the hinge ear at the top is bending; the fix is rarely a hinge bolt, it’s the steel the bolt passes through.
- A clunk when the operator starts or stops. A loose welded mounting plate lets the operator rock under load. The bolts feel tight, but the plate itself is flexing. Left alone, the plate cracks through and the operator hangs off its own harness.
- The chain jumps or rattles on a slide gate. The idler bracket that holds the chain tensioner is welded to the post or the frame, and over time in San Jose’s dry summers and damp winters that weld gets rust-jacked and fails. When the tensioner leans even a few degrees, the chain starts slapping.
- Fresh rust streaks running down from a bracket or hinge. That rust line means water is getting between the steel and the paint, and on a welded joint that rust is working into the weld itself. In San Jose, the worst of it comes from sprinkler overspray, not rain.
- The gate moves in two different paths on repeat cycles. If the gate tracks a little differently each time, a welded bracket has gone from “cracked” to “flexing.” An operator mount or hinge with a partial crack will let the gate move under tension, and the two sides of the crack grind against each other every cycle until one final snap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most welded DoorKing components in San Jose, you’re looking at these installed ranges:
- Hinge ear or hinge post repair: $200 – $380 depending on access and gate weight
- Operator mounting plate fabrication and replacement: $260 – $480 for slide gates; swing gates on the lower end of that range
- Chain idler or tensioner bracket: $180 – $320
- Full gate weld repair (multiple cracked points on the leaf itself): $340 – $800, assessed after we see the gate in person
The range comes down to three things: how heavy the gate is, how much of the old welded steel we have to cut away before we can work, and whether we’re fabricating from scratch or dressing and re-welding what’s there. Every quote is parts and labor together, given in writing before anything gets taken apart. If the repair fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That promise is stamped on the invoice, not just mentioned in the moment.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. What an owner in San Jose can safely do is wipe down the bracket or hinge, check for visible cracks, and snap a photo to send us. That’s it. Welding and fabrication on a gate is not a socket-and-wrench job. You’re working on load-bearing steel that holds a gate leaf that can weigh several hundred pounds. A weld that looks fine on the outside but lacked penetration will let go without warning, and a gate that falls off its hinges does not fall gracefully. Don’t attempt a weld repair on a DoorKing gate if you are not an experienced welder with proper equipment. The same goes for cutting and drilling hardened operator plates: one bad hole and the operator walks out of position.
We would rather you call us and describe what you see than have you under the gate with a borrowed MIG welder. That call costs nothing: (669) 800-5686. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a bracket, a hinge, or the gate leaf itself, and what it would likely cost before we even schedule the truck.
FAQs
A factory welded hinge or bracket on a DoorKing gate in San Jose typically lasts 10 to 15 years before fatigue cracks start, and less if sprinklers hit it daily. A locally fabricated replacement in 3/16-inch steel with a proper paint job will usually outlast the original. Call (669) 800-5686 and we’ll tell you if yours is at that age.
Yes, if the crack is at the edge of the weld and the surrounding steel is still sound; no, if the crack runs through the plate itself or the metal has thinned from rust. We’ll always tell you which one you have before quoting, because welding over a rust-thinned plate means you’ll be calling us again next year. Call (669) 800-5686 for a straight read.
Most single-bracket and hinge repairs on a DoorKing gate take half a day on site, including cutting out the old part, welding the new one, and a cool-down test cycle. Full fabrication jobs where we cut the steel in our shop first usually wrap up within two to three business days. Call (669) 800-5686 and we’ll give you a real arrival window before the day starts.
We stock common mounting plates, hinge ears, and idler brackets sized for the DoorKing 6000, 6100, 6300, and 9000 series on most trucks, along with the steel and welding equipment to fabricate on site when the part has to be matched to an odd gate. We also keep a small inventory of matching components for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates, since plenty of San Jose homes run those too. Call (669) 800-5686 and we’ll tell you what’s on the truck for your model.
If your DoorKing gate is sagging, clunking, or flexing at the welds, call Portcullis Gate Repair San Jose at (669) 800-5686. We’ll give you the written price before any work starts, and we’ll stand behind it for a full year.
