Most Ghost Controls welding and fabrication work in San Jose comes down to one of two jobs: repairing a cracked or broken gate bracket, hinge mount, or post plate, or custom-fabricating a replacement bracket when the factory part isn’t made anymore or never fit the post right in the first place. Depending on what’s actually broken, a welded bracket repair or replacement generally runs $185 – $420 installed in the San Jose area, including the metal, the weld work, and on-site fitting. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the gate starts sagging, the opener strains, and one morning you walk out and see a fatigue crack running through the bracket that holds the actuator arm or the hinge to the post.
Here’s what we see on Ghost Controls setups around San Jose: the operator usually outlasts the steel around it. The motorized arm is still fine, but the mounting hardware takes years of torque, wind load, and daily cycling until a bracket finally lets go. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible mounting plates, hinge brackets, and post plates on the service trucks, and when the factory piece won’t work for your post configuration, we fabricate a bracket in place or at the shop and install it the same day.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls sells its opener kits under a few model families: the TSS1 and TDS2 for single or dual swing gates, the VKP1 pedestal kit, and the AXDP and AXS series for heavier residential or light commercial swing and slide systems. The welding and fabrication work on this page applies across all of them, because the part that fails isn’t inside the motor housing – it’s the steel bracket, plate, or hinge assembly that connects the operator to the gate or the post.
The compatibility gotcha owners don’t expect: Ghost Controls bracket hole patterns are not universal across the product line. The TSS1 arm uses a different mounting footprint than the AXDP series, and mixing brackets between model families can leave the actuator arm slightly out of plane with the gate leaf. That misalignment is what kills a new bracket in six months. Before we weld or replace anything, we pull the model plate off the operator housing – or check the original manual if the plate has worn – and match the bracket plate to the exact series. If the printed model label is missing, we measure the bolt spread and arm length to identify what we’re working with. We also carry quality aftermarket bracket plates that match Ghost Controls OEM dimensions, which gives us a faster and often less expensive option when the factory bracket is on backorder.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags noticeably at the hinge end, even after the hinge bolts are tightened. This is usually a fatigue crack in the hinge bracket itself, not a loose fastener. Tightening the bolt won’t fix a cracked ear; it only puts more stress on the remaining metal.
- You can see a hairline crack running from a bolt hole or weld seam on the post plate or bracket. Cracks that start at drilled holes are a classic stress riser, made worse by San Jose’s seasonal moisture and the constant torque of an automatic opener. What starts as a cosmetic line becomes an actual fracture within weeks.
- The operator arm makes a soft clunk or shudders at the end of each stroke. That’s the arm working against a bracket that has shifted a few degrees out of line, so the motor is pushing at an angle it wasn’t designed for.
- The gate’s travel path wanders or the gate drifts closed over a few hours. A bent or cracked mounting plate changes the geometry enough that the limit switches and force settings no longer match the actual travel, so the opener keeps trying to compensate.
- The post itself shows rust streaking or flaking around the bracket base. Raw or poorly painted mild steel will rust at the weld line in San Jose’s coastal-influenced air after five to seven years. Once the rust has started, the bracket heel will eventually fail at the post connection.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Jose, we quote Ghost Controls bracket or hinge welding and repair work in three honest buckets. A straight bracket swap using a stock Ghost Controls plate runs about $185 – $260 including the bracket, hardware, and on-site fitting. If the existing bracket is cracked and we need to weld-reinforce or modify a stock plate to fit a non-standard post, expect $260 – $340. Full custom fabrication for an unusual post size, an angled mount, or a dual-gate arm bracket runs $340 – $420 plus materials if we have to cut and bend from steel stock rather than adapting an OEM plate.
Every quote includes the parts, the welding or fabrication labor, and the re-alignment of the operator arm before we leave. You get the price in writing before we start, and it doesn’t change after the fact. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld or the bracket fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, written right on the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check three things on your own: tighten the bracket bolts and see if the sag disappears, wipe the bracket clean and look for crack lines at the bolt holes or weld seams, and compare the arm alignment by eye to see if the operator is clearly leaning one way. Those checks will tell you a lot about what’s actually wrong, and they’ll help you describe the problem when you call.
What I’d leave alone is the welding itself. A gate bracket crack isn’t a cosmetic scratch – if you grind it and run a hobby welder over it, you might cover the crack without restoring the structural strength, and the bracket fails again while the gate is mid-swing. High-cycle gate hardware needs proper penetration and often a gusset plate added to spread the load. Dean Prescott and our crew have done this work on Ghost Controls setups across San Jose from the Willow Glen corridor to the larger residential properties up in the Almaden Valley, and we’ll tell you honestly if the part is repairable or needs replacing. Call us at (669) 800-5686 and we’ll quote you before any work begins.
FAQs
In San Jose’s dry summers and damp winters, a properly installed Ghost Controls bracket will typically last 8 to 12 years before showing fatigue cracks at the stress points, but gates that are heavier than the opener’s rating or that regularly get pushed by wind can wear a bracket out in 5 to 7 years. If you’re seeing cracks sooner than that, the alignment was probably off from the start. Call (669) 800-5686 for an inspection.
Sometimes, but not always – a single clean crack in a bracket ear can often be ground out, welded, and reinforced with a small gusset plate, but a crack that runs through a bolt hole or has already propagated within the bend radius usually means the part is done and needs replacing. We’ll make that call after we see the bracket in person, and we’ll quote both options before starting.
Most single-bracket swaps and weld repairs are done in under two hours from the time we arrive, including realigning the operator arm and cycling the gate a few times to verify travel and force settings. Custom fabrication for non-standard posts can add another hour or two.
We keep common Ghost Controls-compatible mounting plates and hinge brackets on the truck, and we also stock aftermarket equivalents for the TSS1, TDS2, and AXDP series. If you need a bracket that isn’t on the truck, we can typically source it from our San Jose suppliers within a day or two. Give us your model number and we’ll check stock before you even book the call.
